Title
Professor Lord Patel of Bradford OBE - (Kamlesh K. Patel)
About

Lord Patel has over 20 years of experience in the health and social care field as a practitioner, manager, policy maker and an academic. He is particularly known for his work with communities across a range of issues including mental health, drug and alcohol use, health and social care, community cohesion, crime and regeneration.

During his career he has successfully established a number of innovative mainstream and ethnically specific field and residential substance use and mental health services. He has also undertaken a wide range of regional, national and international action research projects, consultancies and evaluations.

Lord Patel’s work is trademarked by his insistence that the process of research should benefit the community or organisation that is the subject of the research.  To this end, he has developed a series of acclaimed projects based on models of community engagement and organisational change which have influenced government policy on health, social care and community cohesion. He lectures, advises and publishes widely on his work.

His excellent networking skills, sound business acumen, a sense of social responsibility combined with his ability to identify gaps in health and social care service provision has led to the establishment of a range of successful ventures.

Strong leadership qualities have led Lord Patel to be asked to lead and chair a number of national government initiatives.

He was created a Life Peer June 2006 (Baron Patel of Bradford).

In 1998 Lord Patel established the Centre for Ethnicity & Health at the University of Central Lancashire with only limited funds. Within the last 10 years the Centre has became the largest research institute on ethnicity and health in the UK and employs over 50 staff including 12 internationally recognised Professors. The Centre has gained a national and international reputation for its work in addressing inequality in the health, criminal justice and social care fields. The Centre also established two years ago, the Institute for Philosophy, Diversity and Mental Health. Current national projects include work with the Home Office, New Scotland Yard, the Department for Communities and Local Government and the Department of Health and international work on behalf of UNICEF and World Vision.

The success of the Centre has led to the recent announcement of the establishment of a new pan-university school; International School of Communities, Rights and Inclusion, which will merge several Institutes and Centres (Centre for Ethnicity & Health, Centre for Professional Ethics, Centre for Volunteering and Social Action, Islamic Studies, Institute for Philosophy, Diversity and Mental Health, ENGAGE a social enterprise programme, the Institute of Public Leadership and Management).

Lord Patel is currently a board member of a number of regional and national agencies in the mental health and substance use fields, serving as a non-executive member and Chairman of the Audit and Risk Committee of the National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse; and has served the Mental Health Act Commission since 1995 culminating in his appointment as Chairman in 2002.

Lord Patel has just been appointed by the Prime Minister to act as a Ministerial Advisor to the Secretary of State (Department Communities and Local Government) in respect of the governments PREVENT agenda (Preventing Violent Extremism); as well as being appointed as Chairman of a new taskforce undertaking a national review of prison drug treatment.
